Report a Suspicious Email

Introduction:

Never respond to or follow links in a suspicious email message! You can delete the message, reconfigure your account to block future messages from the same sender, and/or forward it as an attachment to Information Security Services at defendyourdata@mail.wvu.edu for further analysis.

Click the Report Suspicious Email button to start an email to Defend Your Data. This will open a new email in your default email account.

Follow the instructions below to attach the suspicious email:

Do not download the email to your computer.

Outlook: If you received the email to your Outlook account (@mail or personal account) and this is your default email account,

  1. Click the Report Suspicious Email button to start an email to Defend Your Data.
  2. Then drag and drop the suspicious email onto this new email. If it worked correctly, you should see the suspicious email as an attachment.
  3. If that does not work, you can click on Attach Item and then Outlook Item. From there, you can find the suspicious email and click OK.
  4. Add a subject line that lets the receiver know that the email is for a "suspicious email."
  5. Send the email.

Gmail: If you received the suspicious email to your Gmail account (@mix or personal account),

  1. Open the suspicious email, but do not click on any links or open any attachments.
  2. Click on the More button on the right side next to the date the email was sent.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Show original.
  4. Click on the page and then click CTRL + A to select all the text.
  5. With all the text selected, click CTRL + C to copy all of the text.
  6. Then click the Report Suspicious Email button to start an email to Defend Your Data.
  7. In the message section of the new email, click CTRL + V to paste the text.
  8. Send the email.

Other email accounts: If you received the suspicious email to another email account (for example, Yahoo, AOL, Mail.com, etc.), search the web for steps that are specific to your email account provider.
