Use MIX Email with Windows Outlook Client

Overview:

Users with MIX Gmail accounts may wish to use Outlook 2013 with them. The process to set this up requires configuration in Gmail and in Outlook 2013. This also will ONLY support email functionality.

Note: Although Outlook is officially supported with Office 365 for use with @mail.wvu.edu accounts, its use with MIX Gmail accounts is on a "best effort" basis. In cases where this is being configured on personally-owned equipment, there may be support limitations.

Gmail/MIX instructions:

Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe. Microsoft Outlook is one such app that does not support the latest security standard.

There are three things that you will need to do in your Gmail/MIX account to log into it from another mail client:

  1. In MIX/Gmail Mail settings, enable IMAP access (it is off by default).
  2. In myaccount.google.com/security, under Password & sign-in method, enable 2-factor authentication.
  3. At the same page linked above, click App passwords and select the app and device for which you want to generate a 16-character password.
    • App: Mail
    • Device: Windows Computer
  4. Click the Generate button to display your Generated app password. You will need to enter this password later when you configure your Outlook client, so you should copy it.
  5. Click Done when you are ready to move on.
