Change Your Login Password


Login passwords need to be reset/changed at least once every 90 or 180 days.* You should receive an email when your password is about to expire. If your password expired, and you never received an expiration notice, view our Not Receiving Login Account Expiration Notifications article.

*Faculty, staff, and students whose positions have a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance requirement will be required to change their passwords every 90 days. If you do not have a HIPAA compliance requirement, you may complete a security quiz to extend your password to last 180 days.

How do I change my password?

Go to the Login Self Service site ( and click Change Password. Provide the required information. In order to change your password, you will need to enter your current password. If you do not remember your current password, click Forgot Password on the Login Self Service site. If you need help changing your password, view the Login tutorials webpage.

  1. Go to and click Change Password.
  2. Type your username in the provided space and click Next.
  3. Enter the valid response for your challenge question that is presented and click Next.
    Note: You selected these questions and provided the answers when claiming your account or during a password change. You have three tries to enter a correct answer. If you fail, you will need to reset your account.
  4. Enter the New Password and Confirm it in the provided spaces. (See specific password requirements below.)
  5. Once your password is successfully changed, you will see a Success! notification.

What are the password requirements?

All Login passwords MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least eight (8) and no more than 20 characters long.
  • Contain characters from at least three of the following four categories:
    1. Uppercase letters: A-Z
    2. Lowercase letters: a-z
    3. Numbers: 0-9
    4. Only these special characters: / ! ^ ? : . { } [ ] ~ - _
  • Never use any special character more than once consecutively, such as // or ?? or ^^.
  • Cannot include three (3) consecutive characters from your first name, middle name, last name, or username.
  • Cannot have blank spaces.
  • Cannot be among the last five passwords used for Login or any other WVU system.
  • Cannot use the same password within one calendar year.

You should NEVER use your Login username and password on any non-WVU system.
