Change Login Password


If your password is near expiration, you forget your password or need to change it for any reason, follow the instructions below. You will receive an automated email warning when your password is near expiration. Passwords last for one year, with the exception being WVU Police employees, who are required to change their password every 90 days.

Important: The first time you need to change your Login password after July 1, 2019, you must reclaim your account. During this process, you will create a new password and it will last for a year. The process only takes a few minutes.

How do I change my password as a current student?

  1. Before changing your password, turn your mobile devices on airplane mode.
  2. Go to and click Forgot or Change Password.
    Note: The first time you change your Login password after July 1, 2019, you must click Claim Account. During the reclaim process, you will create a new password.
  3. Enter your username and click Continue.
  4. Select one of the identity verification options to be sent a passcode either by text, voice message or email to your non-WVU phone number or email address. Click Continue.
  5. When you receive the passcode, enter it and click Continue.
  6. Create a password that meets these requirements:
    • Be between 8-20 characters long.
    • Contain:
      • At least one uppercase letter: A-Z
      • At least one lowercase letter: a-z
      • At least one numeric character: 0-9
    • Must be different than your last 10 passwords.
    • Cannot have blank spaces.
    • Cannot contain three or more character segments of your name or Login username.
  7. Click Change password. You will receive an email to your WVU email address letting you know that your new password has been created successfully.
    Note: You will not see all three verification options if you did not provide a non-WVU email address and mobile phone number during the account claiming process. If you want to add or change your recovery contacts, go to
  8. After your new password has been created, turn off airplane mode on your mobile devices and update your Login password wherever it was saved.

How do I change my password as a former student?

If you are a former student with no active roles at WVU, follow these steps to change your password.

  1. Go to and click the Manage Alumni Account button.
  2. Enter your WVU username, birthdate, and WVUID number.
  3. Enter a new password that has a minimum of 8 characters. Include at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number and one special character.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. If you entered your information correctly, you will see a message that says "Success."
