Change Your Login Password

Overview:

Login passwords need to be reset/changed at least once every 90 or 180 days.* You should receive an email when your password is about to expire. If your password expired, and you never received an expiration notice, view our Not Receiving Login Account Expiration Notifications article.

If you use a mobile device with your password stored for applications (such as your WVU email or the WVU.Encrypted wireless network), you should put the device in airplane mode or power off the device prior to changing your password. Once you complete the password change, turn the mobile device back on and change the passwords immediately.

*Faculty, staff, and students whose positions have a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance requirement will be required to change their passwords every 90 days. If you do not have a HIPAA compliance requirement, you may complete a security quiz to extend your password to last 180 days.

How do I change my password?

  1. Go to login.wvu.edu and click Change Password.
  2. Type your username in the provided space and click Submit.
  3. If prompted, review and accept the WVU Security Responsibility Statement.
  4. Establish your password change frequency. Individuals subject to HIPAA compliance will have required password changes automatically set to 90 days.
  5. Answer the challenge question presented to prove your identity. If you do not remember your responses to your challenge questions please choose to Claim/Reset your account instead.
Note: You selected these questions and provided the answers when claiming your account or during a password change. You have three tries to enter a correct answer. If you fail, you will need to reset your account.
  6. Enter the New Password and Confirm it in the provided spaces. (See specific password requirements below.)

What are the password requirements?

When choosing your password, you must create one that has not been used within the last year for any WVU or WVU Medicine system. All Login passwords MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least eight (8) and no more than 20 characters long.
  • Contain characters from at least three of the following four categories:
    1. Uppercase letters: A-Z
    2. Lowercase letters: a-z
    3. Numbers: 0-9
    4. Only these special characters: / ! ^ ? : . { } [ ] ~ - _
  • Must be different than previous 5 passwords on any system.
  • Cannot be used more than once within a year.
  • Cannot include three (3) consecutive characters from your first name, middle name, last name or username.
  • Cannot have blank spaces.
  • Cannot use special character sequences such as //.

Note: Do not reuse your username and password on any system outside of WVU or WVU Medicine. Re-using an old password could cause a conflict.
