How to Download Duo and Set up Your Phone

Overview:

Find instructions to set up your phone for use with Duo two-factor authentication at WVU. If you are a student, make sure you're enrolled in Duo before downloading the app. View the How to Enroll in Duo Two-Factor Authentication article for instructions.

Note: The Duo app is supported on devices using Android 6.0 or greater. The app does not reliably work on Cyanogenmod or other non-standard versions of the Android operating system.

  1. Download the app on your Android device:

    1. Go to the Google Play app store and search for the 'Duo Mobile' app.
    2. Install the application. Duo Mobile is free to download and install.
  2. On a computer, go to login.wvu.edu and sign into My Login, where you will see the Duo authentication screen.

  3. Duo will ask what type of device you will be adding. Click the Mobile phone radio button and click Continue. The system will ask for your phone number.
    Note: If you have already added a device, click the Add a new device link on the left-hand side of the Duo Authentication box. You will be asked to confirm that it’s really you before allowing you to add a device.
    Choose an authentication method to prove it’s you adding a device to your account. Accept the authentication request by push or passcode.

  4. Enter the country where your mobile phone is active (leave the default United States) and enter your phone number with area code.

  5. Check the box below the text area to affirm that you have entered the correct number, then click the Continue button when the system has accepted the phone number.

  6. Choose the type of mobile device you wish to add. Click the radio button next to your type of phone.

  7. Click Continue again.

  8. Click the I have Duo Mobile installed button on your computer window. You will be asked to activate Duo Mobile via a QR code.

  9. Activate your device.

    1. On your phone, tap the Duo Mobile app to open it.
    2. Tap the plus (+) sign at the top of the screen to add account.
    3. Hold your phone’s camera up to the computer screen with the QR code.
    4. The Duo app on your phone should communicate with the Duo Authentication that is embedded in the CAS authentication system, and a green checkmark should appear on the QR code.
  10. Click the Continue button. Duo Authentication should now tell you that your Android device was successfully added!

  11. Click Continue to login. You will be taken to the Duo Authentication screen, where you can now authenticate your login.

  12. Choose an authentication method.

    • Click Send me a Push to receive a notification on the Duo Mobile app on your mobile phone. You will see a request that you must click, and then choose Approve. If the notification does not appear immediately, you may need to open the Duo Mobile app to see the notification.

    • Click Enter a Passcode to receive a six-digit passcode on your mobile device. You must open the Duo app, click the key icon to get a code, and type the code into the authentication screen in your browser. You can also generate bypass codes at login.wvu.edu.

  13. You have now successfully logged into WVU’s authenticated systems.

Note: The Duo app is supported for devices using iOS 10.0 or greater. Beginning June 1, 2018, devices running older versions may no longer be able to install the Duo Mobile app. This will not affect mobile app authentications for users who have already downloaded the app.

  1. Download the app on your Apple device:

    1. Open the app store and search for the 'Duo Mobile' app.
    2. Install the application. Duo Mobile is free to download and install.
  2. On a computer, go to login.wvu.edu and sign into My Login, where you will see the Duo authentication screen.

  3. Duo will ask what type of device you will be adding. Click the Mobile phone radio button and click Continue. The system will ask for your phone number.
    Note: If you have already added a device, click the Add a new device link on the left-hand side of the Duo Authentication box. You will be asked to confirm that it’s really you before allowing you to add a device.
    Choose an authentication method to prove it’s you adding a device to your account. Accept the authentication request by push or passcode.

  4. Click Continue. The system will ask for your phone number.

  6. Check the box below the text area to affirm that you have entered the correct number, then click the Continue button when the system has accepted the phone number.

  7. Choose the type of mobile device you wish to add. Click the radio button next to your type of device.

  8. Click Continue again.

  9. Click the I have Duo Mobile installed button on your computer. You will now be asked to activate Duo Mobile via a QR code.

  10. Activate your device.

    1. On your phone or iPad, tap on the Duo Mobile app to open it.
    2. Tap the plus (+) sign at the top of the screen to add account.
    3. Hold your device’s camera up to the computer screen with the QR code.
    4. The Duo app on your device should communicate with the Duo Authentication that is embedded in the CAS authentication system, and a green checkmark should appear on the QR code.
  11. Click the Continue button. Duo Authentication should now tell you that your iOS device was successfully added!
    Note: You may set your default device and your preference for the type of authentication you prefer to receive, or click Continue to login to set those options later.

  12. Click Continue to login. You will be taken to the Duo Authentication screen, where you can now authenticate your login.

  13. Choose an authentication method.

    • Click Send me a Push to receive a notification on the Duo Mobile app on your mobile phone. You will see a request that you must click, and then choose Approve. If the notification does not appear immediately, you may need to open the Duo Mobile app to see the notification.

Note: The Duo app is supported on phones using Windows Phone 7 or greater.

  1. Download the app on your Windows phone:

    1. Open the Windows store and search for the 'Duo Mobile' app.
    2. Install the application. Duo Mobile is free to download and install.
  2. On a computer, go to login.wvu.edu and sign into My Login, where you will see the Duo authentication screen.

  3. Duo will ask what type of device you will be adding. Click the Mobile phone radio button and click Continue. The system will ask for your phone number.

  6. Choose Windows Phone.

  7. Click Continue again.

  8. Click the I have Duo Mobile installed button on your computer. You will now be asked to activate Duo Mobile via a QR code.
  9. Activate your device:

    1. On your phone, tap on the Duo Mobile app to open it.
    2. Tap the plus (+) sign at the top of the screen to add an account.
    3. Hold your phone’s camera up to the computer screen with the QR code.
    4. The Duo app on your phone should communicate with the Duo Authentication that is embedded in the CAS authentication system and a green checkmark should appear on the QR code.
  10. Click the Continue button on your computer. Duo Authentication should now tell you that your BlackBerry device was successfully added!

  11. You may set your default device and your preference for the type of authentication you prefer to receive, or click Continue to login to set those options later.

  12. Click Continue to login. You will be taken to the Duo Authentication screen, where you can now authenticate your login.

  13. Choose an authentication method.
