How to Submit Your Own Mountaineer Card ID Photo

Overview:

WVU Online and Extended Campus (Academic Innovation) students who wish to obtain an official WVU Mountaineer Card can now submit a photo electronically and have their card mailed to them.

Note: Students that attend classes on campus are required to come by one of our Card Office locations to pick up their cards in-person. Only out-of-state and distance students can have their cards mailed to them.

Photo requirements:

In order for the submitted photo to be approved, it must adhere to these guidelines:

  • Frame subject with full face, front view and eyes open.
  • Photograph must be squared, presenting full head from top of hair to bottom of chin, leaving extra space below and above.
  • Photos that are not cropped to a square may be auto-cropped by our software, which can lead to non-centered photos and facial features being cut out of the picture.
  • Subject must be positioned upright at 90° angle in photo. Slanted or other poor angles (i.e. most commonly associated with “selfies”) will not be accepted.
  • Subject must have a natural expression.
  • Position subject and lighting so that there are no distracting shadows on the face or background
  • No hats, sunglasses, other people or objects permitted in photo
  • Submission must be color photograph with subject against a solid white, off-white or light gray background.
  • Photograph must be current. No senior portraits or school photos accepted.
  • Only .JPG or .PNG images are accepted.
  • Maximum resolution is 1024×1024 pixels.

Note: Obtain an official passport photo to make certain your picture is accepted. Visit a local shipping center such as FedEx or UPS, pharmacies such as CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens, or select post office locations to obtain a photo.

How to submit the ID photo:

Submit your photo through MyMountaineerCard:

  • Submit your photograph by logging in to MyMountaineerCard using your Login credentials.
  • If you are not sure what your Login credentials are, please visit login.wvu.edu.
  • Once logged in to MyMountaineerCard, select Submit ID Photo from the left navigation menu, and then follow the appropriate steps to upload your photo

Verify your identity:

  • In order for your ID photo submission to be reviewed, you must submit a recent photo ID of yourself.
  • Acceptable proof of identity includes U.S. driver’s license or state ID, valid passport or military ID.
  • The proof of identity must be an exact match to the student’s name on file at WVU.
  • International students who visit campus may choose instead to stop by a Card Services location to obtain their student Mountaineer Card.

Review process:

Once both photos have been submitted, the request will be reviewed by Mountaineer Card Services staff. Students will be notified of the approval/denial decision for their online photo submission via MIX. In most situations, if a photo submission is rejected, a reason for denial will be included in the notification sent to the student.

When a request has been processed by Mountaineer Card Services, a staff member will e-mail the student confirming the card has been printed and ready for pick-up or mailed to the address provided (online students only).

Activate your card:

Upon receiving the Mountaineer Card in the mail, the student MUST log in to MyMountaineerCard to activate the card.

  • In the left navigation menu, select Report Found Card.
  • Click Yes on the next page to report your card as found.
  • The card will be active and ready for use.
