Have a question about a term you’ve seen in WVUHire? Start with the WVUHire Terms FAQ below.

Mountaineer Temps:

The Mountaineer Temps program is WVU’s temporary employment program. If you are interested in becoming a Mountaineer Temp, please click the Mountaineer Temp button on our jobs page.

WVU staff positions are posted on two different job boards: internal and external. In order to view or apply for positions on our internal board, you must be a benefits-eligible WVU employee. You will use your WVU login information to access it. Any other applicants applying for staff positions (including current students or Mountaineer Temps) will need to use the external job board.

Job number:

When you are viewing the list of positions on one of the WVU job boards, you will see a field entitled Job number. There will be a 5-digit number listed that is specific to the job you are looking at. If you have a question about a position, you will need to know this number.

Posting classification:

The WVUHire system houses five different posting classifications. The classifications, which

  • Classified – belong to the state prescribed classified system, which is uniformly used by all state-run institutions of higher education in West Virginia. These include established pay grades and titles, established by the Higher Education Policy Commission.

  • Non-classified - an employee of an organization who holds a position that is not assigned a particular job and job title with in the classification system and meets one or more of the following criteria:

(1) Holds a direct policy-making position at the department or organization level;

(2) Reports directly to the president or chief executive officer of the organization; or

(3) Is in a position considered by the president to be critical to the institution pursuant to policies adopted by the governing board, not to exceed more than ten percent of its total number of classified and non-classified employees.

  • FE/AP - This group is further broken into two sub-categories: FE’s (FacultyEquivalents) are those primarily assigned to academic units, whose work/duties are academic in nature; AP’s (Academic Professionals) are those who are assigned to administrative or operational units, whose work is predominantly administrative in nature. Currently, it is the Provost’s Office that determines the eligibility of a position as FE/AP.

  • Faculty - Employment as a faculty member for a full academic year (at least a nine-month contract basis) for at least six (6) semester credit hours teaching per semester or the equivalent in teaching, research, public service and/or administrative responsibilities. Faculty are not considered classified employees or subject to the classification program.

  • Temporary - An employee hired into a position expected to last fewer than nine months of a twelve month period regardless of hours worked per week. A temporary employee is not eligible for benefits, but is covered by the classification program.

Exemption status:

At the bottom of a requisition, there is a field entitled Exemption status. This will be filled in with either exempt or non-exempt.

Exempt positions are paid a set salary regardless of the hours worked in a workweek and are not eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week.

Non-exempt positions are required to be paid at least the current minimum wage and must be compensated for hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week.

Posting date:

The posting date will be listed under the title of a position on the job board, and at the bottom of the individual job descriptions. This is the date that the position was posted. This date will also determine the day the position is eligible to be unposted.

Example: If a staff position was posted on Jan. 1, 2016, it is eligible to be removed from the job board on Jan. 11, 2016.

First consideration date:

Some positions may have a First consideration date listed in the Requirements section. Applications received by this date will be reviewed before any applications submitted after the first consideration date.
