Connect Apple Devices Running Older Versions of iOS to Office 365


Office 365 Mobility you to sync Apple devices with email, calendar, contacts and reminders. The directions on this page show how to configure these devices. These directions are written for older Apple iOS. If you have a newer device running iOS 10.x, please visit Connect iPhone, iPad & iPod Devices to Office 365 Email & Calendar.

Mobile Device Mailbox Policy:

Exchange-based email systems like Office 365 use a Mobile Device Mailbox Policy. This policy applies to all devices that connect using ActiveSync. Currently, WVU has not modified the policy from the default configuration. You can read about the mailbox policy on the Microsoft Mobile Device Mailbox Policies page. By accessing your WVU email account using ActiveSync, you are agreeing to the Mobile Device Mailbox Policy. 


  1. Begin by selecting the Settings icon.

  2. Scroll down on the resulting screen and click Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  3. Click Add Account.

  4. Click Microsoft Exchange.

  5. Fill in the required information and follow the instructions below based on which fields you see on your screen:

    • If you see:

      • Email: Enter your actual email address
      • Password: Enter your Login password
      • Description: Office 365

        Tap Next. If you see Server and Username spaces, fill in the following information:

      • Server:
      • Username: Enter your Login username followed by
    • If you see:

      • Email: Enter your actual email address
      • Username: Enter your Login username followed by
      • Password: Enter your Login password
      • Description: Office 365

        Tap Next and the Server field will become visible. Enter
  6. Tap Next.

  7. Ensure the options you wish to have synchronized are set to the ON position and tap Save

You can now return to your home screen and access your account by tapping the Mail or Calendar icon.

Please note that Apple devices may default to synchronizing three days of mail. If you wish to change this, go to Settings, then select Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then Office 365 account. Select Mail Days to Sync and choose the desired period.


If you find that your device will not complete the configuration, please try the following:

  1. Completely power down your device, restart it and try the directions again.

  2. Use your device's Safari browser to attempt to connect to Outlook Web App at

    If you are unable to see the Outlook Web App site prompting for your credentials, your device may not have a functional data connection. If that is the case, attempt to connect again from a location with a good data connection or contact your cellular carrier for assistance with your data connection.

    If you are able to see the Outlook Web App site asking you for your Login credentials, provide them and attempt to log in. If you are unable to log in, the problem may be with your account itself. In that case, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with your account.

  3. Temporarily disable cellular data on your device and connect to Wi-Fi. If you are on campus, please use the WVU.Encrypted network. After connecting to a strong Wi-Fi signal, please go through the set up directions again. We have seen cases where a cellular data connection is not be able to make the initial connection to the Office 365 system. Using Wi-Fi only may help complete the process. Be sure to turn your cellular data back on!
