Slowness and Freezing in Microsoft Word and Outlook 2013

Overview:

Microsoft released an update in February 2016 that can cause extreme slowness when working with some documents in Microsoft Word and when using Outlook. Microsoft has since removed this update, but it is possible that you may still have it on your Windows machines. 

Problem:

You're experiencing extreme slowness when working with some documents in Microsoft Word and/or in Outlook. This can include freezing, not responding, and long lag periods. 

Solution:

Update 3114717 is known to cause this issue. Microsoft has indicated that removing this update and rebooting the computer should resolve the issue.

Note: Depending on your version of Windows, and how your display settings are configured, the directions described below may differ from your options.

To remove the update, do the following:

  1. Click on the Start menu.

  2. Open the Windows Control Panel.

  3. Go to the Programs and Features area. (Note: You may need to click Programs first).

  4. Select Installed Updates.

  5. Locate "Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB3114717) 32-Bit Edition" and click to highlight it.

  6. Click Uninstall.

  7. Click Uninstall in the next window.

  8. Click Yes to reboot the computer. After you reboot the computer, Microsoft Office will be repaired.
