Windows Security Dialog Pops Up Repeatedly

Overview:

Checking "Remember my credentials" for your current password may cause the Windows Security dialog to pop up repeatedly after you change your Login password.

Problem:

After you change your Login password, you begin to see a Windows Security prompt dialog pop up repeatedly when trying to access the Windows Outlook client. It will ask you to enter your credentials.

You may also notice that new Outlook Inbox messages are not being received or a status bar message indicating that you are not connected to Outlook.

Cause:

This problem typically occurs if you have previously checked Remember my credentials in the Windows Security dialog. Later, when you changed your password, the stored password was not updated when you typed in the new password at the Windows Security prompt.

Solution:

  1. Sign into portal.wvu.edu and click the Office 365 link in the right-hand corner to open the Outlook Web App. Once the Outlook Web App is open, try signing into the Outlook desktop client again. If this doesn't resolve the issue, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.
  2. Open the Credential Manager in the Windows Control Panel.
  3. In the Generic Credentials section, locate the Microsoft Outlook entry. Click the pull-down to the right of the entry to expand it.
  4. At the bottom of the expanded entry, click the link labeled Remove from vault.
  5. Respond YES to the prompt asking if you are sure you want to delete this Generic credential from Windows Vault.
  6. Close the Control Panel and restart Outlook.
  7. At the new Windows Security prompt, type in the current password and check the Remember my credentials box.

Note: If you don't check the Remember my credentials box, you won't run into this Windows Security prompt problem the next time that you change your password.
