Connect iPhone, iPad & iPod Devices to Office 365 Email & Calendar

Overview:

Office 365 allows you to sync Apple devices with WVU employee email, calendar, contacts and reminders. The directions on this page show how to configure these devices.

These directions are written for Apple iOS 11 or newer. Visit Microsoft's System Requirements page for more information about supported Apple devices.

Mobile Device Mailbox Policy:

Exchange-based email systems like Office 365 use a Mobile Device Mailbox Policy. This policy applies to all devices that connect using ActiveSync. Currently, WVU has not modified the policy from the default configuration. You can read about the mailbox policy on the Microsoft Mobile Device Mailbox Policies page. By accessing your WVU email account using ActiveSync, you are agreeing to the Mobile Device Mailbox Policy.

Directions:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Passwords & Accounts.
  3. Select Add account.
  4. Select Exchange.
Note: If prompted for a server address, enter outlook.office365.com.
  5. Enter your WVU Login username followed by @mail.wvu.edu. If prompted for a Description, enter name to reference this email (ex: Work Email).
    Note: Retirees should enter LoginUsername@retiree.wvu.edu.
  6. Select Sign in.
  7. Select Active Directory.
  8. Enter your email if it isn't pre-populated along with your WVU Login password.
  9. Select Sign in and Save.

Note: Apple devices may default to synchronizing three days of mail. If you wish to change this, go to Settings, then select Mail and your WVU account. Select Mail Days to Sync and choose the desired period.

Troubleshooting:

If you find that your device will not complete the configuration, please try the following:

  1. Completely power down your device, restart it and try the directions again.

  2. Use your device's Safari browser to attempt to connect to Outlook Web App at outlook.com/mail.wvu.edu.

If you are unable to see the Outlook Web App site prompting for your credentials, your device may not have a functional data connection. If that is the case, attempt to connect again from a location with a good data connection or contact your cellular carrier for assistance with your data connection.

If you are able to see the Outlook Web App site asking you for your Login credentials, provide them and attempt to log in. If you are unable to log in, the problem may be with your account itself. In that case, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with your account.

  3. Temporarily disable cellular data on your device and connect to Wi-Fi. If you are on campus, please use the WVU.Encrypted network and go through the set up directions again. We have seen cases where a cellular data connection is not be able to make the initial connection to the Office 365 system. Using Wi-Fi only may help complete the process. Be sure to turn your cellular data back on!

If you are still unable to get your device to connect, please contact the IT Service Desk.
