Connect Your Windows Phone to Office 365

Note: Support for Windows 10 Mobile devices ended December 10, 2019. For more information please visit the Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile FAQ Website.

Office 365 Mobility allows synchronization of your Windows Phone with your Office 365 email account.

Before you begin:

A Mobile Device Mailbox Policy is used on Exchange-based email systems like Office 365. This policy applies to all devices that connect using ActiveSync. Currently, WVU has not modified the policy from the default configuration. You can read about the mailbox policy on the Microsoft Mobile Device Mailbox Policies page. By accessing your WVU email account using ActiveSync, you are agreeing to the Mobile Device Mailbox Policy.

Automatic configuration:

  1. On Start, swipe left to the App list, select Settings and Email + accounts.

  2. Select Add an account then Outlook.

  3. Enter your email address, your Login password and then select Sign in.

    • Note: If you receive the message, "We couldn't find your settings," follow the steps under Additional steps for manual configuration.

  4. Select OK if Exchange ActiveSync asks you to enforce policies or set a password.

Additional steps for manual configuration:

These steps are only necessary if the Automatic Configuration was unable to complete successfully.

  1. Select Advanced.

  2. Enter the following information:

    • Email address: Use the form of or

    • Password: Your WVU Login password

    • User name: Your WVU Login username.

    • Domain: or or

    • Server:

  3. Select Show all settings and confirm the "Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection" box is selected.

  4. Select Sign in.

  5. Select OK if you are asked to enforce policies or set a password.

If you find that your device will not complete the configuration, please try the following:

  1. Completely power down your device, restart it and try the directions again.

  2. Use your device's browser to attempt to connect to Outlook Web App (

If you are unable to see the Outlook Web App site prompting for your credentials, your device may not presently have a functional data connection. If that is the case, please attempt this again from a location with a good data connection, or contact your cellular carrier for assistance with your data connection.

If you are able to see the Outlook Web App site asking you for your Login credentials, provide them and attempt to log in. If you are unable to log in, the problem may be with your account itself. In that case, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with your account.

  3. Temporarily disable cellular data on your device, and connect to Wi-Fi. If you are on campus, please connect to the WVU.Encrypted network. After connecting to a strong Wi-Fi signal, please go through the set up directions again. We have seen cases where a cellular data connection may not be able to make the initial connection to the Office 365 system, but being on Wi-Fi exclusively may help complete the process. Be sure to turn your cellular data back on!

If you are still unable to get your device to connect, please contact the IT Service Desk, or access Outlook by installing the Outlook app or by using the Outlook web app.
