Changing Your Login Password While Working Remotely

Tags login

Overview:

If you are using a WVU-owned computer to work remotely, avoid changing your Login password unless you believe your account has been compromised. Failure to follow this process may cause you to be locked out of your device.

Note: If you use a WVU-owned Apple device that does not use NoMAD, do not change your Login password without contacting either your college IT support or the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444. If you are using a personally owned computer, or you are on the WVU campus network, you will not be affected by this issue.

Instructions for Windows Computers:

Prior to following these steps, connect to the VPN. Instructions can be found in the Installing and Connecting to Remote VPN article.

  1. After connecting to the VPN, visit login.wvu.edu
  2. Change your password as usual, following the instructions in the Change Login Password article.
  3. After the change is complete, lock your computer by pressing Windows + L. (Do this before disconnecting from VPN.)
  4. Unlock your computer using your new password.

Following the above steps will update the stored login information on your WVU-owned Windows device. If you have any problems, contact the ITS Service Desk.

Instructions for Mac Computers Using NoMAD:

Computers supported by WVU ITS, Potomac State College, Statler College, Reed College of Media, and some Eberly College and Extension Service computers use NoMAD. To check if your computer has NoMAD installed, look at the menu bar in the top right corner. The NoMAD icon looks like the head of a deer.

If your computer uses NoMAD, follow these steps to change your password:

  1. Connect to the VPN. Instructions can be found in the Installing and Connecting to Remote VPN article.
  2. Once you are connected to the VPN, visit login.wvu.edu
  3. Change your password as usual, following the instructions in the Change Login Password article.
  4. Click the NoMAD icon in your computer's menu bar and select Sign In
  5. NoMAD will open a sync window that says "Your network and local passwords are not the same. Please enter the password for your Mac." Enter your previous password and click Sync.
  6. Your computer login password will now be updated to match your new Login password.
If you use a WVU-owned Apple device that does not use NoMAD, do not change your Login password without contacting your college IT support or the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444.
